Job Description:
The City is seeking a trustworthy, responsible individual who, under general supervision, will perform highly responsible, specialized work involving the dispatch of calls for service through the police communications system. The employee works within the scope of established Florida State statutes, City of Eustis Ordinances, and the General Orders of the police department. The employee is also expected to exercise considerable judgment and initiative, when required. Part-time communications officers are utilized to fill temporary vacancies of full-time communications officers due to illness, vacation, or other absences which may arise. Part-time communications officers must have a flexible availability schedule. Part-time communications officers may work up to 30 hours each week. EXAMPLES OF MACHINES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED • Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system; • Emergency 911 phone and instant playback system; • Emergency 911 computer system; • FCIC/NCIC computer/database and printer; • TDD (Telecommunications Device for the Deaf); • Police communications equipment; • General office and computer equipment. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS – • Receives and determines priority level of emergency (911) and non-emergency calls for service; • Ensures emergency and non-emergency calls are transferred to the appropriate agencies; • Operates the police radio communications network and dispatches police officers to emergency and non-emergency calls for service based on zone assignment and availability; • Monitors radio frequencies and maintains contact with officers; • Coordinates activities with other City Departments and outside agencies; • Enters information in the FCIC/NCIC computer and CAD to receive and send information for vehicle registration, wanted persons and other required information; • Makes appropriate and accurate entries into the department’s CAD system related to all calls for service; • Answers the telephone and provides information to the public; • Performs other related duties as required. OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS • Performs clerical work such as filing, typing, compiling reports and records; • Assists the City in the preparation for and aftermath of a major emergency such as a hurricane or other storm or disaster, as needed. REQUIREMENTS: Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills • Knowledge of the geography, the road network and general locations of businesses, schools and surrounding areas; • Significant ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations; ability to work well with others and assist the public cooperatively and courteously; • Significant ability to express oneself clearly and concisely in verbal and written form; • Ability to learn rules, regulations, policies and procedures of dispatching; • Ability to maintain confidentiality; • Ability to work rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays; • Ability to remain at a city work shelter, before, during and after a hurricane or other storm or disaster when directed. Working Hours – Number of hours will vary. Position requires rotating shifts from 6:00 am/6:00 pm to 6:00 pm/6:00 am Salary Range – $12.00 – $17.00/hr; Only applicants with the most job-related qualifications will be selected for interview and further consideration. Additional consideration may be given to applicants with more extensive education, training, or experience. Final candidates will be subject to 911 dispatcher skills testing, which includes data entry/typing, call summarization, character comparison, memory recall, spelling, reading, map reading, prioritization skills, and decision-making. Final candidates may be required to pass a drug test and are offered a conditional offer of employment contingent upon satisfactory results of a thorough background check including criminal history, driver’s license check, & medical exam (if applicable). Minimum Qualifications – High School Diploma or recognized equivalent; Typing and basic computer skills required; Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills; Must have the ability to work in a stressful environment; and obtain 911 Public Safety Telecommunicator Certification within 6 months of employment.

Physical Demands:
This is primarily sedentary work. Requires sitting for long periods of time; frequent reaching and bending; good finger/hand dexterity and hand/eye coordination; good eyesight, hearing and speech.
